I am pleased to introduce SWOT Law to the Canadian business community. I also wish to extend my assistance to people abroad who are doing or are contemplating business in Canada.
SWOT Law is the culmination of 30 years of experience in the law and in business. I have closely observed these two human endeavours interface over the years, sometimes successfully and sometimes with enormous frustration for all concerned. It is from this crucible that SWOT Law was conceived and created.
I envisage SWOT Law as a new way of bringing legal skills to the table for those companies that do not have in house legal advice to manage their legal affairs. We each have a unique ability. What you see on the pages of the Swot Law website is me at my most authentic. It captures what I believe to be my unique ability. I have been doing this as a matter of practice. I never sat down to properly articulate it, until I created this website.
Namely, SWOT Law is about taking complex data points that reflect the reality of a business and tying a legal strategy customized to the needs of that business. This has nothing to do with time spent. It has more to do with listening. Understanding the particular circumstances of a business and how it defines success. It requires a lawyer within the business who can ensure it asking the right questions of external counsel. That is why I make the point on our site that “Time is precious to you and not a commodity to us”.
Building a strategic plan responsive to the needs of a business requires an ability to see a problem at 30,000 feet. That can be hard to do for someone who is on the ground trying to execute a business. The essence of strategic planning is deciding to what you will say “no”. A thorough strategic plan starts with a SWOT analysis i.e an examination of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. It is from here that I coined the concept of SWOT Law.
I look forward to sharing my knowledge and experience through this new vehicle and hope to hear from you, as circumstances dictate.
